I've always subscribed to the notion that in fantasy sports it's not good enough to win a championship, you must also write up a victory speech that can suffice as a blog post.
And that's why it gives me so much pleasure to present Scott Paul with the 2010 Fantasy Football Championship, and with that, the podium:
"First of all, I and everyone in the Four 3 Year Olds organization want to congratulate the Market and Crack team on their hard fought season and championship game. It looked like they had the early upper hand after a double-credit TD by Julian Edelman (plus the Pats DEF/ST), but in the end those sorts of trick fantasy plays were not enough to beat the fundamentals that our team was built on.
They always say that championships are built with defense, and I personally would like to thank the Steelers DEF for their stellar season and carrying our team week in and week out. When your defense has your 4th most points for the season, that either says a lot about them or a little about your offensive players.
Yes, it's true that we started 6 players in the championship who weren't even on our roster at the beginning of the season; and yes, it's true that 3 last minute subs (Westbrook, Rashard Jennings, Nate Kaeding) pretty much single-handedly carried us to victory. Only a GM with incredible insight (and fierce desperation) would have been prepared to make those moves; fortunately, our GM was that (desperate) man. So when team MVP Aaron Rodgers had a sub-par game, and top WR Calvin Johnson turned in a DNP-0, we still had enough to survive.
So gentlemen, as reigning champion, I have learned one lesson: fantasy football, like life, is a crap shoot. You'll probably lose more than you'll win. But damn it feels good to win.
See you next year...."
I guess it should be noted that Scott also came up just short in the championship game in fantasy baseball this year. Safe to say he's woken up from a three-year slumber to grab the attention of the rest of the league.
